Overview: The Republic of the Sudan is regarded as the largest state in Africa, covering an area of about one million square miles. Sudan borders the Central African Republic and Chad to the West, Libya and Egypt to the North, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the East, Kenya, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo to the South. The Nile, at 4145 miles (6,671 km), is the longest river in the world and runs through the country from South to North giving life to millions of people. Museums: Ethnographical Museum: Established in 1932. Gives an idea of country life, economy of the people. The Khalifa's House and the tomb of the Mahdi: Omdurman: Established in 1931. House and relies from the Mahdi's period. Marowe Museum: Northern Sudan: Established in the twenties. Houses the best archeological pieces in the collection, plus a small display of ethnographical materials. Wadi Halfa Museum: Established in 1927. Houses, a display of archeological and Ethnographical materials. Natural Areas: The Rocky Mountains: The Rocky mass of Jebel Barkal rises from the plain about 1.5 miles from Karima. In ancient times it was a holy mountain the abode of God Amon. At the foot of the mountain are scattered the ruins of the temples dedicated at various periods to the worship of God. The remains of about a dozen buildings could now be seen trough little remains of their former splendour.   The Red Sea: The Surface of the Red Sea represent one eight of one percent of the world ocean, it is along narrow marine basin extending from Bab Al-Mandab North wards to the Southern tip of the Sinnai Penisula. The total lenght is about 1900 km of which about 650 km border on the Sudan. Because of the embayment and capes, however, the Sudanese coast line is more than 750 km long. The maximum of width of the Red Sea is 306 km off Port Sudan, the width is about 200 km.
A few kilometres to south of Musawwarat lies te town of Naga. Excavations at this large site were only recently started. however, the standing structures, practicularly on Kushite art architcture of a later period. The best preserved buildings are the lion and Amun temples built by king Natakamani and queen Amanitore. The relief representation of the king and queen on the pylon of the lion temple indicate that they were of equal status. One of the most remarkable examples of kushite architcture is the kiosk at naga, Greek and Roman elements.   
Visa Requirements Transit Visa: Issued to persons going to the Sudan for the purpose of transit, tourism or whose stay would be one (1) to seven (7) days. The country of destination after the Sudan should be indicated on the application form, together with the anticipated date of arrival and departure from Sudan. Applicant's passport should be duly endorsed for permission to enter the next country of destination after the Sudan before application for a transit visa is made at the office. Fee is $150.00 (Non Sudanese Nationals) Entry Visa: Issued to persons going to the Sudan for the purpose of tourism or business whose stay would be from eight (8) days to three (3) months. Extensions of periods of stay in the Sudan may be done through the Passport, Immigration and Nationality Office in Khartoum, Sudan. Fee is $50.00 (Sudanese Nationals) and $150.00 (Non Sudanese Nationals) Other Requirements: Passports must be valid for at least six (6) months from the date of entry into the Sudan. Passports should NOT have Israeli visas or immigration stamps affixed to it. Yellow fever and Cholera vaccinations are recommended. One (1) filled out application form. (Photocopies may be made of the form). One (1) passport sized photograph. Visa application forms must be signed by the applicant. For Tourists: All applications must be presented to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Sudan by either: a Sponsor in the Sudan who can process the application. or a hotel or travel agency. We will add soon a link to a list of hotels and travel agencies who can assist with the visa application process. For Business: A letter from the sponsoring company, stating the purpose of the trip, duration of stay, financial responsibility and references in the Sudan. Copies of correspondences with contacts in the Sudan are most welcome. For Tourists / Business: Visas are issued upon approval by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Sudan. Applications take 4 to 6 weeks. In cases of Diplomatic and Official passports, diplomatic notes are required from the Sudan Desk in the Department of State. No fees are required for Diplomatic and Official passports. If the husband, wife and/or children are in one passport, the fee will be for one (1) only. |
